What are carpet beetles?

Carpet beetles, resembling small mottled brown, grey, and cream ladybirds, are a common pest in Britain. Unlike the black Fur Beetle, which sports a single spot on each wing case, carpet beetles are distinguishable by their coloration and size, measuring between 2 to 4mm in length.

Despite their diminutive stature, carpet beetles pose a significant threat to the British textile industry, surpassing even the Clothes Moth in terms of damage caused. However, it’s not the adult beetles themselves but their larvae that wreak havoc.

During the months of April through June, adult carpet beetles seek out suitable nesting sites to lay their eggs. These sites can range from old birds’ nests to accumulated fluff, felt, or fabric within buildings. Once hatched, the larvae feed voraciously on organic materials, including textiles, causing considerable damage in the process.

Carpet beetle facts

Carpet beetles, resembling small ladybirds, come in two common varieties. The varied carpet beetle, typically 2 to 4mm long, displays a mottled pattern of black, white, and gold. Meanwhile, the typical carpet beetle presents hues of mottled brown, grey, and cream.

During spring and early summer, female carpet beetles lay up to 100 eggs on natural fibers like furs and wool. These eggs hatch into hairy, brown larvae known as woolly bears, which evade light and curl into balls when disturbed. It’s these larvae that inflict damage on natural fibers as they feed and grow.

The lifecycle of a carpet beetle spans from egg to adult over approximately 10 to 35 days, influenced by temperature. Female beetles can lay between 20 to 100 eggs during their lifespan.
